February 2005

Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world
of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover it all!

At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like to
share with our readers. Here are some photos that just wouldn't fit
into the magazine this month.

This month we continue the celebration of PCA and Panorama's 50th anniversary year with a reprint of R. E. Bodmer's December 1971 story about his first days of Porsche ownership. More than 30 years later, his experiences, both painful and funny, still ring true. And for this month's Gallery, we look at Panorama covers from the decade of the 1970s. Those were days when the magazine's the budget kept the cover mostly to two-color treatments and artists like famed Playboy cartoonist Howard Shoemaker and Mike Williford made the most of that format.

We refer you to the magazine for even more articles. How do you get your copy? Join PCA, Porsche Panorama is a prime benefit of membership!

Contributing editor and well known cartoonist Howard Shoemaker gave us the February 1970 cover. Turning the logotype sideways was a rare departure.

The first full color cover shot specifically for Porsche Panorama was the September 1971 cover showing Sun Valley Parade-goers relaxing at Redfish Lake, Idaho.

A tribute to Professor Ferdinand Porsche, the founder of the dynasty, was the cover story for the July 1972 issue. The charcoal portrait is by Dick Inman of Peachstate Region.

More fun from the inventive mind of Howard Shoemaker. As the number of forward gears in Porsches increased, Shoemaker decided to poke a little fun.

With gas climbing to what were then considered astronomical prices, Shoemaker decided that by December 1975 Porsches would be riding on owner's backs rather than the other way around.

A three color posterization by Leonard Turner graced the December 1976 cover. The tricky part was fitting the Christmas tree into the 911 Targa.

Dramatic use of full color made a wrap-around cover for the December 1977 issue. Greg Volan's painting was presented to Ferry Porsche at the San Diego Parade that summer.

July 1978.

Bill Sholar, founding father of PCA, attended his last Parade at Reston, Virginia, in 1979. Besides Bill, only Ferdinand and Ferry Porsche have appeared as cover portraits.

Check out the February issue for a cover story on John Von Neumann, the early Porsche distributor in California who was also a successful racer, a report from Bob Rassa on the outside suppliers that provide content for the Porsche 911, as well as profiles of the men and women who lead PCA's cadre of volunteers. And don't forget to catch R. E. Bodmer's 1971 retrospective on falling in love with a Porsche. The more things change, the more some things stay the same!
