September 2001

Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover it all!

With the September issue, we introduce you to the new 2002 Porsche 996. We refer you to the magazine for the whole article. How do you get
your copy? Join PCA, Porsche Panorama is a prime benefit of membership.

At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like to share with our readers. Here are some supplementary 2002 911 Carrera (the first evolution of the 996) photos shot by Panorama Photographer, Leonard Turner, at the official Porsche 2002 premier showing in Europe.

VarioCam Plus: the multiple lobed cam
opens the valves wider when the outer
collar around the valve stem is
engaged by a sliding pin.

VarioCam Plus on the 2002 911 Carrera takes valve train design one step further
than any previous model. Cam timing is
now infinitely variable over a wider range.

Highlights of the new 996 include 320hp (301 last year) from a new 3.6ltr flat-six engine that has a 5% improvement in fuel efficiency.

New exhaust tuning sets free more of the visceral Porsche sounds that have been choked back in recent years by (primarily European) noise regulations and the advent of water cooling for the 911.

The 25% more rigid chasis allows for a more compliant suspension and an improved 1.04 skid pad rating.

International press introduction of the 2002 911 Carrera at Murnau, Germany, included a full size cutaway demonstrating engine position and the folding top mechanism of the cabriolet.

The standard 17-inch wheel is a ten-spoke alloy design that saves 8 lbs of unsprung weight over last year's.
An optional five-spoke 18-incher is even lighter!

For the first time in Porsche history, the 911 cabriolet gets a heated glass rear window.
