July 2003

Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world
of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover it all!

At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like to
share with our readers. Here are some photos that just wouldn't fit
into the magazine this month.

For Panorama's cover story this month, Bruce Anderson went to Weissach for an intense technology workshop on the Carrera GT supercar. That set us to thinking about Porsche's other great supercar, the 959. Here is a gallery of 959 photos shot over the years by Leonard Turner.

We refer you to the magazine for even more articles. How do you get your copy? Join PCA, Porsche Panorama is a prime benefit of membership!

Wolfgang Porsche's car and his castle. His 959 is approaching Schloss Prielau at Zell am See, Austria.

Shown at the historic race car exhibit at the 2003 Porsche Parade in June, 959s are rare anywhere in the world but particularly uncommon in the United States.

Interior of the 959 looks dated now, but reflected the ultimate in 911 cockpit design in the mid-1980s.

At the Nürburgring press introduction in 1985, journalists were given 20 minutes of driving time each.

The 959's power came from a 450-hp, 2.85-liter, six-cylinder engine derived from the racing 956.

Cutaway of the 959 was displayed at the Nürburgring during the presentation by Helmuth Bott. Asked if the car had 200-mph windshield washers to match its top speed, Bott replied, "We can engineer cars, but we can't engineer intelligence in drivers --200 mph is too fast to drive in the rain."

In Seefeldt, Austria, at the introduction of the 996 Carrera 4S, Porsche displayed its all-wheel-drive stars, including the 959 and, behind, a Paris-Dakar rally car.

Special cars, special drivers. The red 959 belongs to Peter Porsche, the stone gray example to Helmuth Bott. They were together at Ludwigsburg Castle for the 30th anniversary of the 911 in 1993.

Porsche introduced the 959 to the world press at the Nürburgring in the spring of 1985.
