Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world
of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover
it all!
At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like
to
share with our readers. Here are some photos that just wouldn't
fit
into the magazine this month.
European Editor Michael Cotton remembers Porsche driver, team
manager, PR boss and editor of Christophorus Rico Steinemann in
our August issue. Steinemann was in charge as race boss in 1969
when the 917 hit the world stage. That sent us back to the archives
looking for some of Leonard Turner's favorite 917 shots for this
month's Panorama Gallery.
We refer you to the magazine for even more articles. How do you

Porsche pit at Daytona in 1970. The 917K, entered by
Gulf-Wyer and driven by Brian Redman and Jo Siffert, finished
second to their teammates Pedro Rodriguez and Leo Kinnunen.
A scoring snafu that led Siffert to believe that he was
40 seconds out of first place resulted in a heart-stopping
duel between the Swiss driver and Mario Andretti aboard
a Ferrari 512.

Legislated out of sports car competition by the FIA,
the 917 found new life as Can-Am cars in the United
States and Interserie spyders in Europe. Owned today
by Mike Amalfitano, this Interserie car was originally
a Gulf-Wyer coupe, crashed by Mike Hailwood at Le
Mans in 1970.

The 917 long-tail entered by Martini Racing and
driven by Gerard Larrousse and Vic Elford at Le
Mans in 1971 had the second best time in practice
but retired in the second hour.

When Porsche came to the Can-Am in
1972, McLaren had dominated the series for five straight
years. Roger Penske's 917/10K entries for Mark Donohue
and George Follmer put an end to that.

The Wyer team gears up for action at Sebring in
1970. This was the year that none of the 917s finished
well and Steve McQueen and Peter Revson finished
second in a 908 behind Andretti's Ferrari.

At Sebring in 1971, the Gulf Wyer team faced difficulty
again, the victory going to Vic Elford's Martini
917. Eagle-eyed observers will see John Wyer, David
York and Pedro Rodriguez in this shot.

This 1100-hp 917/30 represents the pinnacle of 917
development. At Rennsport Reunion at Lime Rock in
2001, Roger Penske himself took the famous Can-Am
spyder for a ride.

Check out the August issue of Panorama for Joe Rusz's trip
to Austria to drive the new 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet, a
report on Porsches at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the final
installment of Patricia Ktistes' Trackdance series on women
and driving, and, of course, Cotton's remembrance of 917s
and Rico Steinemann.
