February 2004

Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world
of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover it all!

At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like to
share with our readers. Here are some photos that just wouldn't fit
into the magazine this month.

The cover feature for the February issue is the story of a pair of 356s. That set us to thinking about Porsche's first venture into automobile production and for our Gallery this month, we bring you a collection of photos from Leonard Turner that salutes the ancestors of our current cars.

We refer you to the magazine for even more articles. How do you get your copy? Join PCA, Porsche Panorama is a prime benefit of membership!

Complete with the correct white wall tires, this Speedster was a top contender when it was shown at the Milwaukee Porsche Parade.

The first fifty 356s were built in Gmünd, Austria. This 1949 Gmünd coupe was still active in vintage racing when it was shown in 2000 at the Sacramento Porsche Parade.

At the Monterey Vintage Races Salute to Porsche in 1998, we see a Gmünd coupe, a 1957 356A and 1958 356A among others.

Speaking of ancestors, here is the first of them all--Porsche #1, driven by PCNA's
Bob Carlson, at the Mont-Tremblant
Porsche Parade.

Iconic view of the most potent 356 ever produced, the four-cam Carrera 2 which was in many ways a match for early 911s.

Striking and functional, this headlight grille is a feature new cars haven't seen in years.

Before there were 356As, Bs and Cs, there were simply 356s. Here is a beautiful example caught in the rain during a national concours judging.

356 models often saw duty as police cars in various countries in Europe. This survivor was lovingly restored and brought to Saddlebrook last summer.

Some 356s may be dogs, but this dog has his own 356.

With smoking tires, this forty year old Speedster is still a tough autocross competitor.

Check out the February issue for Bob Gutjahr's "Pair of Threes," Bill Oursler's story of the journey of a certain 908 from the high speed banking of Monza to the heat of the original Can-Am and then to the precision of championship autocrossing, the first in our "Two for the Road" series on great automotive escapes and lots of technical questions and answers. And, by the way, take a close look at the cover and see how many Porsche crests you can identify in the photo!
