August 2004

Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world
of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover it all!

At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like to
share with our readers. Here are some photos that just wouldn't fit
into the magazine this month.

The cover story for the August issue features the brand new 911 Carrera, aka 997, and Leonard Turner's first photos and driving impressions. Here are more images of the new Porsche, shot on location outside of Hannover, Germany.

We refer you to the magazine for even more articles. How do you get your copy? Join PCA, Porsche Panorama is a prime benefit of membership!

Bi-xenon headlight of the Carrera S is now oval, restoring the classic 911 face. A similarly configured halogen unit is standard on the Carrera.

Standard fare at press introduction, the cutaway car reveals classic 911 components encased in the smoothest, most aerodynamic body yet.

The gentle flare of the rear fenders separate the 997 from its 996 predecessor. Aerodynamic sophistication is a hallmark of the new design, providing the Carrera with a drag coefficient of 0.28, while the Carrera S with its wider wheels comes in at 0.29.

The Tiptronic wheel commands the best yet of Porsche's five-speed torque-converter transmissions. Stay tuned for the PDK paddle shifter in the next two to three years.

They may look like passenger handcuffs, but the high-tech cup holders do their job and then mercifully disappear into the area above the roomy glovebox.

Topped off by the optional dash-mounted stop watch of the sports chrono package, the center console combines radio, GPS navigation and lap time displays.

Time on the autobahn was limited by weather and traffic but proved the Carrera to be an outstanding performer with strong pulling power in all gears.

More widely spaced than in the past, instruments in the 911 Carrera are black faced; those in the S are aluminum covered.

Retaining the good looks of 911's past, the 997 distinguishes itself in a new muscularity as its specific visual identity veers away from the Boxster.

The retractable rear spoiler now carries four louvers, the rear wiper is glass-mounted and inconspicuous and the engine type is revealed by the dual exhaust tips of the Carrera S, single oval outlets for the Carrera.

Check out the August issue for all the technical details on the 997, a report on the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the California celebration of the 356 Speedster's 50th anniversary, everything you need to know about Porsche wiring diagrams and more.
