October 2004

Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world
of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover it all!

At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like to
share with our readers. Here are some photos that just wouldn't fit
into the magazine this month.

First pictures of the new Boxster Type 987 appear in the October issue. That put us in mind of all the great Boxsters we've reviewed since it was first shown at the Detroit Auto Show in 1993. For this month's gallery, we take a trip down memory lane with Porsche's mid-engined roadster. All but one of the photos were shot by Leonard Turner. The photo of the new car comes direct from Porsche.

We refer you to the magazine for even more articles. How do you get your copy? Join PCA, Porsche Panorama is a prime benefit of membership!

Panorama's cover car in February 1993 was the startling Boxster prototype unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show.

Trick interior pieces on the prototype included fans in the doors and center console, gold faced instruments and seats with matching Boxster red jackets.

Although the side opening were revised for the production model, the signature headlights and overall look of the car were fully established.

Compared to the production version of the Boxster, the prototype showed markedly different rear lenses and the absence of roll hoops.

The first production Boxster (1996) had a completely functional cloth top, unlike the prototype, and different road wheels but was true to the overall flavor of the show car.

Distinctive new wheels on the S were complemented by the dual pipe exhaust and S emblem on the rear deck.

An unusual demonstration vehicle, created by factory apprentices, shows the intimate relationship of the engine to the passenger compartment.

Although not often seen on Boxsters, the optional hardtop maintains the sleek silhouette of the convertible setup.

The first major revision of the Boxster since the 1993 show car features new headlights, air intakes, a reduced coefficient of drag, increased horsepower and torque.

Introduced in 1999, the Boxster S offered design cues in the front vents and a large increase in power.
