December 2004

Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world
of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover it all!

At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like to
share with our readers. Here are some photos that just wouldn't fit
into the magazine this month.

Featured in the December issue is the first in a new series of Panorama Technical Snapshots. This month the focus is on Porsche's first mid-engined roadster, the 914, a car that has entered the new century with an ever growing number of admirers who respect them for their agile versatility, refreshing simplicity and high fun quotient. Our gallery celebrates the 914 with a look at the competition models that earned it a solid reputation on the track, along with a couple of unusual variations on the 914 theme, all photographed by Leonard Turner.

We refer you to the magazine for even more articles. How do you get your copy? Join PCA, Porsche Panorama is a prime benefit of membership!

The Porsche 914

This California based 916 was shown at the Milwaukee Parade.

For the 1970 running of the 86 hour Marathon de la Route, three 914/6 GTs fitted with two-liter, 160 hp 911S motors, finished one-two-three. Owned today by Miles Collier, this is the 916/6 GT that finished third.

Driven by Hurley Haywood and Peter Gregg, this 914/6 GT boasted some 240 hp and won the 1st IMSA GT championship in 1971.

After his Formula One days, Richie Ginther campaigned a pair of specially prepared 914s, shown here at the ARRC race at Road Atlanta. Who says 914s don't oversteer?

Those twin pipes sticking out the rear are connected to a small-block Chevy shoehorned in by the owner; shown at the Fort Worth Parade.

A common 914 conversion has been to replace the fuel injection with carburetion, as has been done on this nicely restored car.

Bert Everett and Lee McDonald were among a number of 914 drivers who competed successfully at Sebring in 1972.

Fierce competitors and frequent winners in PCA Parade autocrosses, the most recent 914 conquest was accomplished by PCA national VP Tom Provasi, whose wife, Sandy, took top women's honors with the same unbeatable machine.

Check out the December issue for the full story on the Porsche 914, along with a feature on transforming a worn out old race car into a no-holds-barred RSR, a new segment of the Art of Driving with Canadian ace Rick Bye, a salute to Cornerworkers, plenty of Technical Q & A and more.
