January 2008

Each month, Panorama magazine brings you the best from the world of Porsche. Races, vintage car shows, technical articles, we cover it all!

At Panorama, we never have room for all the pictures we'd like to share with our readers. Here are some photos that just wouldn't fit into the magazine this month.

In the January issue we profile the Collier Museum 908/3, one of the stars of Rennsport Reunion III.  The 908/3 was a car whose agility trumped horsepower on the twisting circuits of the Nürburgring and Targa Florio, driven by men like Brian Redford and Vic Elford.  That set us to thinking not just of the cars of Rennsport Reunion but the men who drove them as well.  For this month’s Gallery we take one last look at Rennsport, this time pairing Leonard Turner’s photos of the men with their cars.

We refer you to the magazine for even more articles. How do you get your copy? Join PCA, Porsche Panorama is a prime benefit of membership!

Vic Elford and the Martini 917 longtail with which he claimed the pole at Le Mans in 1970.  Vic says today that it remains the most beautiful paint job ever applied to a racing car.

There was never but one 917/20, aka the Ping Pig, and Willi Kauhsen drove it in its single appearance at Le Mans in 1971.  Kauhsen entertained PCAers at the Saturday night Rennsport dinner.

Together again:  British ace Richard Attwood with the 917K he drove to Porsche’s first ever victory at Le Mans (1970).   Today Attwood says the historic nature of the win didn’t sink in for several years.

This 908 “Flounder” was a factory-entered long-tail coupe when Joe Buzzetta drove it at the Daytona 24-hour race in 1969.  Converted to spyder form by Porsche that same year, Joe has owned it for many years.

The Collier Museum’s well used 917-019 came to Rennsport as it was raced at Spa by Gijs van Lennep in its last official appearance for the Martini team.

David Piper (with Richard Attwood) scored the 917’s second victory with this car at the nine-hour race at Kyalami in 1969.  Piper still occasionally vintage races he campaigned in real time through 1970.

In 1964 George Follmer claimed the United States Road Racing Championship title with his Porsche four-cam powered Lotus 23.  He’s best known, of course, for his 1972 Can-Am crown, won at the wheel of a 917/10 Turbo spyder.

Derek Bell, one of the most successful drivers in the history of the Le Mans 24 Hour classic, raced one of the final evolutions of Porsche’s 956/962, the Kremer Brothers K8 spyder, on several occasions.
