The Parade 2004 Golf EventThis will be held at the Doral Tesoro Hotel & Golf Course on Wednesday morning, July 7, with an 8:00 shotgun start. We think you will really enjoy this course. This course is a high-quality course in a great location (just across the street from Texas Motor Speedway, site of many Parade 2004 events, including the Club Race, the Yokohama Ice Cream Social, the Drivers’ Education, the Rally ending point, and the autocross). Just think, you can bring the golfer to the Golf Event, and have the family’s driver participate the same morning in the autocross or the Driver’s Education, all in the same car! Very close to Texas Motor Speedway (you can hear the glorious sounds of Porsches running). This course is located about a mile west of I-35 on Highway 114, across from the entrance to Texas Motor Speedway. After having been designed by Greg Norman, it opened 3 years ago with high expectations. High scores, too, at the time. Greg shot 82 in his first round here, we’re told. But the course was substantially redesigned in 2003 by Jay Morrish to be friendlier to golfers visiting for the first time. The changes make for a significant improvement, and we have played the redesigned course and believe you will enjoy it as much as we did. This course combines trees and creeks and will give you a taste for Texas. Your entry fee includes a shared cart, and lunch following the golf event. Golf shirts are available for purchase at $32 plus tax, and they are nice. THE DORAL TESORO As Golf Chairs, we diligently have played all of the courses below in order to determine the best course for the Parade Golf Event. (We’re both high handicappers, so our views may be biased on whether we got poison oak while searching for our tee shots.) We hope you’ll enjoy discovering some of the great courses nearby for Texas golf. Lee and Linda Wilkins 11-18-03
Less than 4 miles from downtown Fort Worth, this is the oldest and closest course, with a view of the Fort Worth skyline from many holes. Generally the fairways are Texas-style, with long, wide, level and open landing zones for your tee shots. Easily walkable. Great closing hole, too. Not an upscale golf course, but good, fun, and inexpensive.
Just over 11 miles from the Worthington. Rated #4 Muni in Texas, good value, too. Actual old rail-yard house and locomotive adorn the course. Lots of mature trees. The front 9 starts with a dogleg left, but generally the fairways are open and allow some warm-up time before the back 9, which plays tougher.
Over 8 miles from the Worthington, on the way to Texas Motor Speedway where the Parade driving events (Club Race, DE and Autocross) will be held. It is about halfway there, just take the first exit north of 820 and watch for the Fossil Creek signs in among the many Chili’s, Macaroni Grill and other chain restaurants on the right. This course is a Jack Nicklaus design. Quite a few holes have homes lining the fairways, but thankfully they are spaced far enough away that slices and hooks are unlikely to reach them. A nice design with good greens and several absolutely devilish holes. The carts have an early version of GPS (greyscale), which you should use carefully lest you be too long or short for good course management. Our runner-up choice for the Parade Golf Event, but some of the holes can’t be figured out until you’ve played the course more than once.
14 miles from the Worthington, but worth the drive. One of the best courses in this area, rated 4 Stars by Golf Digest. A truly rural setting, no homes to be seen anywhere on this course, but keep an eye out for bobcats and lynx. We expect the greens to be in great shape. A few blind holes, but generally a fair and very scenic course, with lots of mature trees and rolling hills. Read your yardage book, and enjoy. The closing hole is beautiful, but can make you cry.
