Event Type:
AutoCross

Chicago Region at The Tire Rack August  24th 9 a.m. EST

PCA Chicago’s autocross mission is to provide a safe and structured environment in which to promote the development and improvement of driving skills. Autocross is a low-cost automotive competition open to all Porsches that pass tech inspection. Autocross is designed to teach each participant advanced car control technique, so that the participants improve their driving abilities, and to better understand vehicle dynamics. Autocross participants can take their skills to the real world and become better, safer drivers.

Autocross is a timed competition where drivers navigate through a temporary course created by traffic cones, rather than racing on a track with multiple other cars. Autocross places emphasis on car control, handling and driver skill rather than sheer horsepower. PCA Autocross has many classes which allow any model and vintage Porsche to compete with other Porsches exhibiting similar performance characteristics.

While race track speeds are not met, the constant attention required for continuous precision turns, plus braking and accelerating, makes autocross one of the highest adrenaline motor sports you may ever attempt. Most drivers have no idea what speeds they attain, as you must constantly “look ahead” to the next high precision cone element. At every event, we are treated to a unique course layout, with lap times in the 40-60 second range. Autocrossing is an economical introduction to learning skills such as acceleration, braking, turn in, and other precision vehicle control that transfer to road racing.

Autocross events are held in large parking lots. New course designs are created for each event so drivers must learn a new course each time they compete. Prior to driving, a competitor should walk the course multiple times, take mental and written notes, and develop a strategy to be refined upon each run.

Most autocrossers are driving enthusiasts who enjoy motorsports competition. Typically, they compete with their street car. Some autocrossers are serious road race drivers who want to practice technique and polish their skills and compete in highly modified cars. Autocrossers are people with an inclination for speed that challenges their driving ability.

PCA-Chicago recommends attendance to the annual Precision Car Control Clinic held each April. Throughout the season of 5 monthly “competitions”, there are experienced driving instructors available to help the novice to learn the elements of auto cross, and for the intermediate to “take it up a notch” with in-car instruction. Only a PCA instructor may ride in the passenger seat with a participant.
