This past weekend several PCA club racers answered the call of the hill climb in their Porsches, taking on a difficult, twisting road course that makes the Chasing the Dragon Hill Climb. While it’s uncommon to see Stuttgart’s finest contesting hill climbs in any large numbers nowadays, a 914, an early 911, and a GT3 RSR made their rounds up the mountain in Robbinsville, North Carolina, and all three won their class.

The course tests man and machine over 2.2 miles and a 1,000-feet climb up a mountain road adjacent to the Nantahala Forest, just miles from famed route U.S. 129. Club racing hot shoe and course record holder Cory Friedman of Palmetto Region was once again campaigning an Autometrics-prepared GT3. But instead of a GT3 Cup car, this year he piloted a 2007 GT3 RSR, in an attempt to better his overall course record of 114.704 seconds. Unfortunately, damp conditions early on Saturday hindered his ability to challenge his own record. However, he did once again find himself alone atop the leaderboard — more than a second quicker than anyone else up the hill, and more than 31 seconds ahead of his closest GT1 competition — after dialing in a 116.487 on his third run of the day. On Sunday, the second and final day of the event, Cory won overall, but still wasn’t able to top his record.

Bob and Nadine Saville of Carolinas Region took on the hill in their Naroescape Motorsports GT2-class 914-6. By the end of Saturday, Bob held nearly a six-second lead over the nearest GT2 competition, and Nadine was just off the podium heading into Sunday’s competition. Bob ended up securing a win in GT2.

Rock Webb, also of Carolinas Region, driving a 1973 911T, held a nearly two-second advantage over his nearest competition in the Vintage Closed Wheel class by the end of Saturday. On Sunday, he took the class win.

Take a look at the videos below to get a feel for the event. The first video is Bob Saville in his 914-6 from last weekend’s hill climb, and the other is Cory Friedman in a GT3 Cup at a 2011 event.
