Video: Watch new 911 GT3 tear it up on track

Friday, April 28, 2017

To many people, it was a shame when the 991.1 GT3 and GT3 RS both arrived with no option for a manual transmission. Porsche wised up and will offer a six-speed manual with the 991.2 GT3, but you’ll have to wait until later this year before it’s available. In the meantime, the first reviews of the PDK-equipped car are starting to trickle out — and the verdict is quite good so far.

On paper, the new 2018 model is, according to Drivetribe host Jethro Bovingdon, “More of the same but a few percentage points better.” But he also says those minor improvements to the engine, chassis, and tires make for a driving experience that subjectively feels much better than before.

Let’s focus on the engine before you watch the video: up to 4.0 liters, from 3.8; 500 horespower; rigid instead of hydraulic valve train; and 9,000 rpm redline (up from the 911R’s 8,500 rpm) put this flat six up there with the best of them from the last five years. What more could one want?

Watch the video above to see how much magic Porsche has injected into the new 911 GT3. (We'll be sure to share part II of the video once it's released.)
