Video: Seasoned auto journalist's car of choice is a Porsche 996

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: The 996-generation Porsche 911 is a great car that happens to be underappreciated at the moment. It would seem Drivetribe’s Jethro Bovingdon would agree, as he details his own Porsche in his latest video. Read between the lines, and you’ll realize now is the time to buy a 996 at a bargain.

When Bovingdon first started out as an automotive Journalist from EVO magazine, he was hardly a Porsche 911 enthusiast. But just a few weeks into the job, he got a ride in a 996 911 Carrera and knew he had to have one as his own. So he bought one years later, in 2013.

The car in question is a 1998 model and was owned by somebody who worked at a race shop. When Bovingdon bought it, it was in pretty sorry condition cosmetically, but it had a rebuilt engine and some tasty upgrades. These included factory optional limited-slip differential, GT3-style seats, adjustable coilovers, and an aftermarket exhaust. Since he’s owned it, lightweight wheels, semi-solid engine mounts, and a rebuilt and upgraded suspension system have been added.

So watch the video above to see what all the fuss is about the 996-gen 911 from a seasoned automotive journalist who owns one.
