PCA Spotlight: The four stages of IMS bearing failure

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Last year we took a trip out to Flat 6 Innovations research and development facility in Georgia to learn all about the intermediate shaft (IMS) and the IMS bearing in Porsche’s first water-cooled flat sixes. These two engine components have proven problematic in some Porsche 911s, Boxsters, and Caymans from model years 1997 through 2008. Our latest video explains the four stages of IMS bearing failure.

With help from IMS bearing experts Jake Raby and Charles Navarro, we’ve previously brought you films explaining what the IMS and its bearing are and the functions they perform, and ways to help extend their service lives. If you’re an owner of a water-cooled flat six-powered Porsche up to model year 2008, or are in the market for one, you owe it to yourself to watch this video — and potentially save yourself a lot of trouble down the road.
