PCA Club Racing expands vintage racing program

Tuesday, April 3, 2018

Article by Ryan Carignan

As cars and technology progress, the speed and capability of our Porsches on the track has increased dramatically. This progress has led some racers of vintage Porsches to feel out of place on the track as they find themselves surrounded by cars with hundreds more horsepower. After realizing some racers had parked their vintage race cars because of this, PCA Club Racing created a run group to fix the situation.

PCA Club Racing introduced a Vintage Group focused on 1983 and older air-cooled Porsches at the Potomac Region Silver Anniversary Club Race in 2016.  From that start, the class gained traction and evolved to four races in 2017 and will now feature five races in 2018.

This class offers an environment for racers to enjoy racing their vintage Porsches again, or if they have been racing in non-vintage classes, it offers them a chance to run with similarly prepared and powered cars. The Vintage Group has its own run group, giving the class a true vintage racing experience and reigniting the comradery that comes with keeping these fantastic race cars on the track. They will practice, qualify, and race three sprint races, which is a delight for the drivers and folks watching alike.

The majority of PCA Club Racing events follow a three-day format, with practice sessions beginning on Friday. Saturday schedules typically contain qualifying rounds and two 30-minute sprint races. The third and final day will have endurance races lasting about 90 minutes  for the regular classes and run groups, but not the Vintage Group, which runs the third and final sprint race of the weekend.

For 2018, the Vintage Group will race at Lime Rock Park, Monticello Motor Club, New Jersey Motorsports Park, Summit Point Motorsports Park, and Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Oklahoma, the first foray into the mid-west. As the group continues to grow, we hope to expand to more Regions around the country to enjoy the fantastic racing facilities where PCA Club Racing already has a long history of competition. There are some great vintage Porsches out there that we would like to see back on track all around the country, and with this Vintage Group, we aim to accomplish just that!
