Video: 1000 Ways to Fail: 911s take on the Baja Mexican 1000

Tuesday, August 8, 2017

A Porsche had never finished the NORRA Mexican 1,000 rally — until this past April, when a team fielded two 964 Carrera 4s to conquer the inhospitable terrain over five days of off-road racing.

Gamroth Racing from Oregon prepared the two Porsches and brought along some serious driving talent to ensure the team finished the race. Shop owner Jeff Gamroth and colleague Carl Van Austen drove one, the red car nicknamed “Red Sled,” while Jeff Zwart and Cameron Healey drove the other, “Desert Flyer.” It would be tough for the height-challenged sports cars to navigate the rough terrain over nearly 1,000 miles, but fortunately Gamroth’s crew came prepared — even bringing a spare engine in case of a worst-case scenario.

Watch the video above to follow Red Sled and Desert Flyer from the race start in Ensenada to the finish in Cabo San Lucas, and admire the gumption it takes to finish driving Stuttgart’s finest.
