G50 g'box Oil - Best type and Weight ?

My owner's manual says to use 90W in the G50 g'box (not LSD).  Time has marched on, and now we have greatly improved lubricants from which to choose.  I would like to use a full synthetic, and am also interested in using a multi-grade oil such as an 85W-140. 90W-140, etc. for better protection in the summer heat.  I will greatly appreciate your input.

-  Subsequent to my initial post (paragraph above), I've found many with professional Porsche experience are saying that Mobil 1 Synthetic Delvac 75W-90 is the way to go.  Any issues with that lubricant ?



how to remove shift rod

I'm trying to remove the shift rod,so I can replace the bushing in the cup area.It's disconnected at the back. but won't slide back far enough to come out of the shifter.Thanks.

Clutch Shuttering '86

Visited my mechanic recently and he says time for a clutch. Took me out to car and shutters (vibrates) when starting out in 1st gear. I had not noticed this problem before!. Clutch had been done @ 60,000 (I was not owner).Car has 126,000 on it now. So, is this shuttering the death knell for this clutch? Will damage to flywheel also result? Thanks,

Changing gear ratios

I'm thinking of changing the gear ratios of 2nd thru 5th gear of my car to make them a little lower. I'm leaving 1st alone as I've been told that changing 2nd thru 5th are simple and only involve pulling the old gear off and putting the new gear on while changing 1st is more involved. I think that this was case with the 915 transmission. Is changing 2nd thru 5th gear on a G50 transmission similar to the 915 or is it more involved. Thanks for your help, Russ.

car does not go into any gear

Car was sitting about 3 months. Started fine, pressed the clutch and tried to put into 1st gear and there was a grinding/resistance would not go into any gear. Clutch pedal felt normal, maybe a little lighter, seems like the clutch just did not engage. Any help would greatly be appreciated. The car is original and otherwise in great condition. Thank You.

pedal cluster wear

I took my 1984 911 for a full blown inspection and on the list the technician described " no clutch play at pedal and pedal cluster wear assesment" Which means they need to get into the area to see exactly what is wrong. In my opinion I feel the clutch is fine as far as play. Can you possibly explain what they mean?

Transmission changes

I own at 1985 911 Carrera. First gear syncro is shot and second is getting worn. I was wondering if a 1986-89 G50 transmission could be installed in my 1985 without any significant issues. What I mean is the housing bolt partern the same, gearing ratio the same, clutch flywheel pressure plate the same, and shift linkage the same?If so is there any disadvantage and or benefit to using the G50 over the factory installed transmission?Thanks for your assistance
