1972 911T Swapping In a Newer Shifter

Vehicle Information: Model: 911T; Year: 1972; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.4, Stock; Total Mileage: 160000;

Last fall, before putting the car to bed, the plastic sleeve on the shifter which holds the shift rod in place broke. I would like to use this event as an excuse to upgrade the entire shifter to hopefully get rid of some of the broomstick in oatmeal shifting feel. I have driven a 73 1/2 911T and noticed a more definite shifting feel. From the pictures in my Haynes, it looks as though from 73 1/2 to 78, there was a different and better design than the one I have. Can I swap in a later year shifter without altering the rest of the car? What are my options and what are your thoughts? Can I go even later than 78?
