1973 Shifting Problems

Transmission

Vehicle Information: Model (914/4, 914/6): 914/4; Year: 1973; Engine (type, size, modifications): Stock air cooled horizontaly opposed 4 Cylinder, 1.7 liter; Total Mileage: Tach says 80,000. About 60,000 on the engine;

My clutch cable broke, and I had to drive the car home by starting it in gear, and just shifting by moving the stick. I didn't go higher than second gear. I replaced the clutch cable, and since then I have all gears except for fourth gear. The gear shift lever is a little hard to get into gear, and once it does it will grind and pop out. Fifth gear before all this happened popped out with a loud clunk a couple of times, but is now fine. I replaced the bushings at the shift rod selector assembly, but I haven't replaced the firewall bushing because it doesn't move very much, less than a 1/16". The clutch has been adjusted, and I am still having the same problem. It's like there is no fourth gear, or that it is not getting fully into place. With the car off and I put it into fourth gear the car will roll making a small popping sound. If you have any tips on what it could be, or how it could be fixed I would greatly appreciate your help.
