1976 912E fuel injection & temp sensor II (head temp sensor)

Fuel System

Model: 912E, Year:1976, Mileage:76,000, Type of use:Street use only
I am working on a friend's 1976 912E. The car has been sitting in his garage for 15 years without being driven. It is barely running. I have two articles concerning the L-Jetronic fuel injection on this car and both include the temp. sensor II or head temp sensor. This car doesn't seem to have one although, even with a mirror and bright light, I can not see into the hole in the sheet metal just aft of the #3 spark plug because of the intake pipes and air injection tubes. There is no wire coming out of the hole and the grommet is long gone. Also, there doesn't seem to be a connector in the wire harness to connect the sensor too even if it is there. Can anyone verify that this vehicle should even have a temp sensor II (head temp sensor)? I have had four '73 914 2.0s and know what the sensor is and where it should be on that engine. The vehicle was purchased new in California and still resides there. The owner has decided to register it again and it need to pass the smog test. The car starts fairly easily but after that it won't idle and runs very rough.
