1979 911 SC alternator housing question, and more

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 SC; Year: 1979; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: ???;

I replaced my whining alternator with a rebuilt alternator, this one whines AND appears to have a bad voltage reg.(lights now go bright/dim). I now have my old unit being rebuilt by a known shop. My main problem is: the alternator housing is cracked in 3 of the 4 vanes, appears the housing allowed the vanes of the fan to slightly rub the housing. What are my options? Can I have the old housing welded (heli-arched) and hope for success? Or should I buy a direct replacement?I see many of these parts available, but none (so far) at a reasonable price for my 1984 3.2 motor. The fan looks fine, the housing is not. Can a good heli-arc welder make safe repairs, is this worth giving a try?
