1979 911SC Transmission Popping out of gear

Vehicle Information: Model: 911SC; Year: 1979; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 100,000 plus;

While driving home from the NNJR Watkins Glen drivers education event yesterday the transmission popped out of 3rd gear, one mile from my home (after a 6 hour drive) for no reason. The car ran fine over the 2 day track event and for the preceeding 6 hour drive from NY to NH. After reselecting 3rd gear I noticed that any small pressure on the gear shift knob also caused the transmision to pop out of 3rd gear. I don't want to cause any additional damage so I figured I would ask for your guidance.Is there a series of diagnostic steps to take to find the root cause of this new problem. Could it be linkage adjustment, fluid levels, or just wear / breakage within the transmission. If the latter would you recommend a rebuild or replacement (new, used or rebuild).I have reasonable technical skills (having rebuilt my 914 engine and doing all sorts of suspension / brake work on the SC) but do not have the time or patience to drop the engine or rebuild a transmission myself. I would appreciate any assistance you can provide.
