1981 911 SC Significant Oil Leak

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 SC; Year: 1981; Body Type: Targa; Total Mileage: 107000;

I have a significant oil leak which appears under my engine. My car was idled for a few weeks because of an alternator failure. During the down time I removed the fuel injection system and replaced the gaskets etc on the oil pressure switch, the breather plate and the oil thermostat. After reassembly the car runs fine and no leaks are apparent around the repaired areas but a new leak has surfaced. This leak deposits what I would guess is a 12"+ circle of oil when parked for the evening. It appears to be coming from the opening on the underside where the engine and tranny mate. When do you throw in the towel and assume it is the main seal behind the flywheel. If this is the case do you recommend engine only removal or engine and transmission together?
