1983 911 SC Shifter spring missing?

Vehicle Information: Model: 911SC Cabriolet; Year: 1983; Body Type: Convertible; Total Mileage: 69000;

There seems to be a spring missing in my shifter. When the shifter is moved from the centered neutral position to the right towards (5/reverse) there is a spring or something that biases the shifter back to the centered position. However, when moving from the centered neutral position towards the left (1/2) there is no resistance. The shifter just loosely flops from left to center. I've looked at the exploded view of the shifter mechanism, but can't tell what component might be missing. I am also having shifting problems. Could it be related?
