1983 944 Intermittent starting

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944): 944; Year: 1983; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.5 L; Total Mileage: 104,000;

944 would not start about 2 years ago. After the dealer repaired it for $750, it started OK for a time then failed to start some of the time.A new, more powerful battery helped for a while, then the problem returned. More recently, the car would not start in a parking lot. A guy said to push it backward and pop the clutch and it would start, and it did.I don't drive the car frequently because of this starting problem, but when I do I can always start it by pushing it and popping the clutch. When I do that, it seemed to be breaking something loose like a stuck starter on some old cars I owned, but the starter turns over like normal, and the car won't fire sometimes unless I push it and pop the clutch.Before I spend more money on the problem, can you offer any idea what could be wrong given the above.By the way, it runs like new when started. Timing belt changed about 8,000 miles ago.
