1984 911 Carrera Fuel mixture adjustment

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Carrera; Year: 1984; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): "Performance" chip, Borla, lowered, that's about it.; Total Mileage: 32,000+;

I don't want to get anyone in trouble with this question so I will understand completely if it goes unanswered. Anyway, here goes. Is the mixture screw on the air flow meter a screw (phillips or slotted), an allen screw or just what? The plug is gone which indicates to me a previous owner messed with it. I am not going to mess with this myself until I get a CO meter. Right now I'm just gathering information. The car runs ok but gas milage isn't what it should be and after a long drive the rear quarter of the car is covered with a light soot.
