1984 911 Carrera Runs Lean

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: Porsche 911; Year: 1984; Body Type: Targa; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 litre 6 cylinder stock; Total Mileage: 160,000 kms (100,000miles);

Late last season my car began to exhibit some unstable idle after longdrives and some hesitation during rapid acceleration from zero. Following methods described in Sep' 01 and Mar' 02 Panorama Tech Q/A Ihave reset the idle to 800 +/- 20 rpm. Idle appears stable, but I'mrunning lean with slight backfiring. Per methods described in theBentley 911 Carrera Service manual I've ruled out;1. Faulty idle speed control valve per p.240-22.2. Faulty O2 sensor per p.240-24.3. Faulty volume air flow sensor per p.240-16.I'm about to tackle the elusive air leak as the next most likely causebut need guidance as to where to start. Bentley p.200-13 is too vague andI'm sure some hoses and fittings are more likely than others.
