1984 944 Temperature Gauge Sender

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944): 944; Year: 1985; Engine (type, size, modifications): Stock; Total Mileage: 160,000 km;

I recently installed a rebuilt, older 944 engine into my 1985.5 944. The temperature sender of the older engine does not electrically (or physically) match the 1985.5 temperature sender. If I connect the old sensor to the new gauge, it always shows that the engine is cold. Are the temperature co-efficients of the two sensors different?Also, is this sensor used purely for showing temperature on the instrument panel? If so, is there some work around so that I can get a meaningful reading on the instrument panel? (Otherwise I will have to drive around without temperature readings)
