1985 911 Carrera Heater control problem

Heating and Ventilation

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Carrera; Year: 1985; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2L; Total Mileage: 130000;

I noticed the heater control unit between the seats doesn't actuate the heat last winter. I was able to manually disconnect the springs at the heater duct to get full heat. I believe the circuit board in the console which controls the electronic actuation of the heater cables (instead of the SC older 911 manual levers)has failed. How does one check with a VOM which part of the circuit board is in need of replacement? Also can it be the sensor on the window that's defective (how does one test that?)or the temp probe in the heater duct itself on the driver's side (again what test can be performed to isolate the culprit part before I spend $450 for the replacement board?).
