1985 911 Carrera Intermittent Running in Rain

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1985; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): stock engine 3.3L-rebuilt at 80K miles; Total Mileage: 133K ;

I have a problem which seems to be getting progressively worse. Everytime the car is out in a heavy rain the engine starts fine but runs veryrough and rich (black smoke and smell of unburned fuel and burned matchodor). The only way I can keep it running is to maintain rpm's over 2500.Occasionally I have not been able to do that and the engine quits. I havebeen able to start it again, with one exception when it had to beflatbedded to my mechanic. Once I do get to my destination (about 4miles) and shut it down and let it sit for 15-20 minutes it will thenstart and run as normal. This has also happened when I drove it directlyto the mechanic under the rough running conditions. By the time he getsto it whatever is causing the problem has dried out and the engineperforms as normal. Frustrating to say the least. My mechanic knows thePorsche marque well but we can not find the problem. All engine wireshave been replaced (at my request). Just recently when the car wasflatbedded in they thought they determined it was the reference sensors.Both were replaced and the car seemed fine the next day after a lightrain. But several weeks later in a heavy rain situation the problem aroseagain as severe as ever. I searched your question list and saw no othersituation like this.This car is still running strong and I would like to keep it. But giventhis situation, I can't rely on it. So, I hope you can point me in theright direction in an effort to solve this dilemma.
