1985 911 Carrera Steering Rack

Suspension and Steering

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1985; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): US 3.2 external mods only; Total Mileage: 96,000;

All of the sudden after driving on some ruinous New York City highways, Inoticed looseness in the steering of my 1985 911 Coupe. I have isolatedthe problem to the area of the steering rack, but have not begun todisassemble anything in that area yet.Not more than 15,000 miles ago, I had the suspension completely replaced,which included turbo tie rods, shocks, sway bars, torsion bars, bushings,you-name-it. The car was also lowered (below Euro spec, but above a raceheight), cambered out a bit, corner balanced, and aligned.So, I would suspect that either something behind the plate covering therack is loose, or the steering rack has begun to wear out. Before I getunder the car, are there any other possible problems that you haveencountered in this area? How long should a steering rack last, and atwhat point does it become dangerous to drive before replacement? Also,would you go with a rebuilt rack, a modified rack (for occasional trackuse), or a brand new factory rack? (I drive the car approximately 3,000miles/year, and other than this recent problem it drives like a real"champ").
