1985 ROW 911 Carrera Backfires

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: row Carrera; Year: 1985; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2l row stock; Total Mileage: 148,000 klms;

I have had the car for two years. It is very strong and runs nearperfectly under all conditions except one. It will sometimes backfirewhile slowing down from higher rpms, especially if the run up to higherrpms was done at full throttle (fast highway passing, for instance). Itonly happens while coasting (trailing throttle?) back to lower rpms. If Ibrake at least reasonably quickly to slow the car it will not backfire.Because of it's higher compression I try to keep the highest octane gas Ican find in it but, around here, it's 91 or 92 at best. What might becausing the backfire? And, can the backfiring damage the engine?
