1986 911 Carrera Will a 245 on the rear make that much of a difference?

Wheels and Tires

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1986; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2L , SSI; Total Mileage: 33,936;

I have 7 & 8, 16" Fuchs on my '86 Carrera NA, non turbo look body. I need to replace the tires and a lot has been written about replacing the rears with 245's instead of 225's. Does the change to a 245 tire offer anything in the way of improved handling, or is it simply cosmetic. Also, many people have told me that the 245 on the rear is not a good idea on the 8" rim but o.k. on the 9". If the 245 offers better handling, I would be inclined to make the change only if it is a safe size to fit on the 8" Fuchs.
