1986 944 Coolant/oil heat exchanger

Vehicle Information: Year: 1986; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.5 L; Total Mileage: 133,000;

I noticed I started to get some oil in my coolant. I have done some research and I think I need to replace my seals in the heat exhanger. I have my whole coolant system apart and all the hoses and radiator out of my car and I am cleaning any bits of oil out. I have drained the oil and now I plan to clean the surfaces of the oil cooler cover and put in the new seals. Do I need to use some kind of glue on the seals? I got the oil cooler out of the car but not the housing. I cannot get it out without removing the exhaust headers. Is it OK to clean it inside the car and reassemble it?
