1986 944 Overheating

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944): 944; Year: 1986; Engine (type, size, modifications): 2.5L; Total Mileage: 75000;

I'm having overheating issues and I'm pretty certain its has something to do with the cooling fans. The fans function when depressing the defrost or air conditioner switches. Otherwise, the fans do not work. I've replaced the thermo switch, thermostat and hoses.With the defrost switch on, the engine temperature will go down to near normal. With the switch off, the temperature gauge approaches the second mark on the gauge. It seems to make no difference if the car is stopped or moving.With the air conditioner switch on, the fans function, but does not have the same affect to the temperature as does the defrost switch. However, my a/c hasn't worked for years. I just turned it on for the cooling fans.
