1987 911 Carrera and the use of Ethanol

Fuel System

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera; Year: 1987; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2; Total Mileage: 177000;

California is switching to the use of ethanol to replace the octane booster MTBE. The change officially starts January 1, 2004. But most gasoline suppliers are starting to change to the 5.7% ethanol mix now. The owner manual for the 1987 Carrera warns of use of a mixture above 10% and warns the continued use of any gasoline mixed with an alcohol based additive can cause problems with the fuel system, smog compliance, drop in gas mileage, performance, etc. What can we do? I'm a daily driver and would hate to give up driving my car. If there is not a fix, what model years would you recommend that would not have a problem with this new fuel mixture.
