1987 924S Cam and balance shaft belt change

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 924S, 924S; Year: 1987; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 151,000;

After recently purchasing this 1987 924S, and finding out from the previous owners that the timing and balance shaft belts have never been changed, I have done so. I did not have a P9201 belt tensioner so the belts were tensioned so that on the long side I could barely turn the belt 90 degrees. I now have what I would describe as a noticable whine and it appears to be coming from the front of the engine.It sounds louder than prior to changing the belts. Could I have tensioned them too much or too little, or is this whine a result of a bearing going bad. The tensioners were marked prior to disassembly and have been returned to their original locations.
