1987 944 Coolant temperature

Heating and Ventilation

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944 NA; Year: 1987; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 146000;

The car appears to being running hot. After the car heats up the gauge sits right on the upper white mark. The radiator, water pump (rebuilt model) and thermostat was replaced a year ago and the thermofan switch was just replaced. The car has been vented twice since the thermofan switch replacement. I have verified the fan relay and fans are operating properly by unplugging the thermofan switch and jumping across the three connections making sure that the fans are coming on slow and fast at the appropriate times (i.e., A/C on/off, ignition on/off and so on). What is strange is if I keep the heater control to full hot the temp gauge reflects everything fine. As soon as I turn the heater control to the cool setting it moves right back to the upper mark. I can be driving down the road and turn the heater switch back and forth and watch the guage move up and down according. When I put the heater control to full hot I make sure to leave it for a good while to make sure the cooling effect is not just the cooler water entering into block. Any suggestions? Thermostat?
