1987 944 Engine pulsing

Last time I asked this question you advised unplugging the O2 sensor and see if the pulsing stopped - it did. However, when I replaced the sensor the pulsing was still apparent, albeit less noticeable. At the last emissions test the car failed because I had forgotten to reconnect the sensor, but passed after plugging it back in and running the engine for about 10 mins. This makes me think the O2 sensor is not the problem. My local garage (non-specialist) just finished running a diagnosis and noted the mass-airflow meter readings at 5volts and 0.502 KO @ approx 26degC. The specs say the reading should be closer to 3.6 KO at this temp so is this a sign that the meter is bad and if so, can this be the root of the pulsing? I also noticed the exhaust ''popping'' when in a hard over-run (takes me back to my mk2 RS Mexico days!), do you think this is related? Incidentally, I have also had to replace the DME since my original question (the car died), so I doubt it is at fault.
