1987 944 Intermittent no start condition

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944; Year: 1987; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 105,000;

I am having an intermittent starting problem that seemed to occur about a year ago. I did not seem to have a problem until I replaced the battery. Shortly after the new battery the car would not start. The engine was warm. I pushed it, popped the clutch and everything was fine. A few weeks later it did it again. Again I popped the clutch and everything seemed fine. After the third time I took it to the shop and they said that I had a bad battery and replaced it under warranty. About a month later it happened again. I took it back and this time they had it for three weeks and could not get it to duplicate. 2 months later while at the shop it happened to them and they diagnosed it as the starter. I replaced the starter and a month later same thing. This time they are telling me that the rear hatch needed adjustment because the light came on intermittently, draining the battery. Every time this happened I had full function of lights and electronics. When I turned the key I can hear and feel a thud coming from under the drivers side. Any suggestions?
