1987 944 Turbo Engine rebuild

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944 turbo, 944 turbo; Year: 1987; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 135000+;

I recently damaged what was explained to me as a bearing that resides between the connecting rod and crank. Whether due to a lack of sufficient oil in the turns and\or age of the engine. I was also told that I need a total rebuild of the bottom end. But, after talking to some wrencher friends, they said that it may not have to be completely necessary to remove the whole block and that the problem can be accessed via removal of the oil pan, but they were not familiar with 944's. What do you think?
