1987 944S Harsh ride

Wheels and Tires

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944S; Year: 1987; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 222,000 km;

I have owned my 944S for four years. It is my daily driver from Apr to Oct, averaging 7,000 km per year. A previous owner installed 17 x 9 rear and 17 x 7 front wheels, Cup style. Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport, 255/40ZR17 rear, 205/50ZR17 front. These tires were installed, new, when I bought the car, and have plenty of tread left.I have come to dislike the harshness of the ride; it seems that I feel every bump or ridge in the road. As I often do trips of 200 to 400 km on secondary roads, the stiffness of the ride is annoying. All four shocks were renewed with OEM Boge shocks last year, with no change to the ride harshness.I note that the standard OEM wheel/tire combination for my car was 215/60VR15 tires, on 15 x 7 wheels all around. The optional OEM wheel/tire combo was 225/50VR16 rear, on 8 inch wide wheels, and 205/55VR16 front, on 7 inch wide wheels.I am very seriously considering buying a set of 16 inch wheels, 7 inch wide for the front and 8 inch wide for the rear, and mounting the 225/50 and 205/55 tires that were offered by Porsche as the optional wheel/tire combo for my car 21 years ago, all in the search for a more comfortable ride.Am I on the right track? Should reverting to the 16 inch, higher profile tires soften up the ride? Might I save some money and achieve the same result by staying with my current 17 inch wheels and replacing the Michelin Pilot Sports with another make of tire? I would be grateful for your thoughts on this.
