1987 944S Heel-toe downshifting

Cables and Controls

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944S; Year: 1987; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 63,700;

I recently purchased this car and am pleased overall with its performance. I like the brakes and the pedal feel, which is very firm. However, I can't seem to catch the accelerator pedal with the outside of my right foot when I attempt to heel-toe downshift. I have extensively autocrossed another brand of sports car for years, and I had no problem. The brake pedal was "softer" and allowed more pedal travel, so I could easily blip the throttle while downshifting and braking at the same time. It there a solution to this issue?
