1987 Carrera H-5 Headlight Wiring upgrade

Electrical and Electronic

Vehicle Information: Model: Carrera ; Year: 1987; Body Type: Targa; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 liter, cat bypass, Weltmeister chip; Total Mileage: 106,400;

My question is regarding installation of the recommended wiring upgrade to utilize higher output headlamps. I've followed the suggestions of previous tech question responses and installed a Hella relay for the high beams (@100 watts), a 25 amp in-line fuse and also 10 ga. wire for both the hot leads and the grounds. Now that I have fed the wires into the headlight buckets for each fender, I note that the original, smaller gauge wire that goes into the lamp socket appears to be quite permanently attached. What happens now? Do I cut the old wire and splice the heavier gauge wire to the old socket feed - or is there a new socket that I should have purchased into which I should install the 10 ga. wires? It seems rather self-defeating to run heavier gauge wires for all but the last 2 inches of the run...
