1988 911 Carrera /another engine misfire question but different (follow up)

Engine

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Carrera; Year: 1988; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 liter; Total Mileage: 77,000;

I didn't want to clutter the original question but since you mentioned valves and compression I will add that I get a puff of smoke when I crank the car after sitting for a while. It started out only doing it every third or fourth time I cranked it. It is getting worse now, more smoke, more frequently. Also, what will stop the smoke all together most of the time is that I can shut down the engine with clutch pressure so that the engine does not come to a comfortable rest. Does this narrow the problem any?
