1988 911 Carrera Difficult Shifting Into 4th

Transmission and Clutch

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Carrera; Year: 1988; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2 L; Total Mileage: 86,500 miles;

Our car goes into the shop in 2 weeks for a new clutch as well as the"clutch cross-shaft, bearing update." The other problem they're lookinginto is the difficulty we're experiencing shifting from 5th to 4th andjust recently 3rd to 4th. If I release the pressure on the shifterslightly and then try again it will go into 4th about 50% of the time.The shop has suggested a possible synchronizer problem. They won't knowwithout tearing the transmission apart (7-8 hours labor, minimum). I'veapproved tearing the transmission apart but only after they check theshifter mechanism for anything worn or bent (bushings, couplings, o-ringsetc). Do you think this an unreasonable request? Also do you have anywords of wisdom?
