1988 911 Carrera Starting Problems

Fuel System

Vehicle Information: Model: 911 Carrera ; Year: 1988; Body Type: Coupe; Engine (type, size, modifications): 3.2L Stock; Total Mileage: 19200;

I am the original owner of the above vehicle and much of the 19,000 totalmileage that the car has was incurred during the first two years that Iowned it. The car had its 15,000 mile service performed in the spring of1990. Subsequent services have been for oil changes and other routineregular items (e.g., brake fluid flushes, etc.). Since 1990, I haveattended several drivers education events but none since about 1994. Ihave never experienced any starting problems with the car until earlythis past August. At that time, I had the car out on a relatively warmday for a short drive to run some errands. The last thing I did before Ireturned home was to fill the tank. When I tried to start the car acouple of weeks later, the engine would turn over but would not start.Since I had put very minimal mileage on the car for several years and thefuel filter had not been changed recently, I changed the fuel filter afew weeks ago. I was finally able to get the engine to start and run fora short time. The engine idled roughly and there was a great deal ofsmoke which from the smell appeared to be from unburned fuel. However,after running for about 5 minutes, the engine stalled and I could not getit refired. The engine did run long enough to build up some oil pressurebut not until it came up to operating temperature. I have tried to startthe car on several occasions since, but have had success on only twooccasions with the same results as noted above. When I try to start thecar, I do note the smell of gas so I believe that gas is getting to theengine. At this point, I am concerned that one or more of the spark plugsare fouled so my next step was going to be to try to change the plugs. Doyou have any guidance as to whether this is the appropriate direction orcan you suggest another area that I should investigate?
