1988 944 Erractic heater operation

Heating and Ventilation

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944; Year: 1988; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 106000;

Behind the dash (vacuum switching valve?) usually clicks on and off, sounds like a telegraph key, for the first 20 minutes or so of driving, then settles in to the set point. This happens, and the heat comes on even when no heat is called for. But, after about 20 minutes or so it operatesnormally and correctly. My mechanic who specializes in older Porsches told me that it is likely the climate control unit...perhaps a cold solder joint, and that's why it's OK after a while.1. how do I remove the climate control unit, 2. how do I troubleshoot it, or should I just heat up all the solder joints? With other older electronics equipment I've found this often solves problems. Any other ideas about this will be appreciated.
