1988 951 Engine block

Vehicle Information: Model(924/944/968): 944; Year: 1988; Body Type: Coupe; Total Mileage: 31,000;

While replacing my head gasket, I noticed a dark area on the surface of the block near the water jacket. Looking further, I discovered that this area is slightly depressed from the surrounding block material. There is about 3/8" between the outer wall of the block and this depression. It appears that there was a defect when the block was manufactured, and the area was filled-in. My questions are:Is this common? Should any liquid gasket type material be used to build up this before placing the head gasket on?
